Justice summit

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Attorney General Ashley Moody today announced more than $2 million in recoveries and savings for Florida seniors at the U.S. Department of Justice Summit on Fighting for Elder Justice. Attorney General Moody joined U.S. Attorney General William Barr at the summit in Sun City Center, Florida—where most of the residents are 60 or older.

Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “Protecting Florida’s seniors is a major focus of my office, and I am grateful for U.S. Attorney General Barr’s commitment to this important mission. Since taking office, we have recovered more than $2 million for older Floridians through the efforts of our Senior Protection Team and Seniors vs. Crime. My office’s Senior Protection Team attorneys and investigators are dedicated to this vital mission and I look forward to continuing to work in this area to ensure Florida remains a welcoming state for retirees and people enjoying their golden years.”

During the summit, Attorney General Moody highlighted more than one million dollars in recoveries through her Seniors vs. Crime Program last year. The recoveries are included in the 2019 Seniors vs. Crime Annual Report. According to the report, Seniors vs. Crime volunteers, known as Senior Sleuths, worked more than 1,900 cases of reported fraud resulting in more than $1.7 million in recoveries and savings for Florida seniors.

Attorney General Moody also highlighted the work of her newly formed Senior Protection Team. Attorney General Moody announced the formation of the Team a year ago tomorrow. Since the announcement, the Team has recovered more than $287,000 for Florida seniors.

Members of the Team and Senior vs. Crime volunteers attended Senior Day at the Florida Capitol earlier this year to help educate older Floridians about common scams and ways they can prevent fraud.

Today’s announcement is part of a week-long effort by Attorney General Moody to highlight new initiatives and achievements in the fight to stop fraud in Florida. The campaign is being rolled out in conjunction with National Consumer Protection Week.
