As of 2022, there are nearly 340,000 homicides unsolved within the United States dating back to 1965. Florida has 6% of the nationwide total at just over 20,000 cases. Attorney General Ashley Moody created Florida’s Cold Case Investigations Unit to assist local law enforcement agencies, particularly those facing resource constraints, by dedicating additional resources to select unsolved cases. The Florida Cold Case Investigations Unit strives to deliver long-overdue justice for the grieving families of victims and to help Florida law enforcement.

"Florida's Cold Case Investigations Unit exemplifies our commitment to justice and victims. By creating a specialized and dedicated unit to focus on unsolved homicides, we stand at the forefront, ensuring closure for victims' families. Our unit not only pursues justice but also assists law enforcement agencies grappling with limited resources, showcasing Florida’s leadership in proactive, collaborative and relentless pursuit of truth and justice for victims."
