The Office of Statewide Prosecution (OSP) was created by Florida’s voters in 1986 to counter the expanse of crime in our state. Criminal organizations need to be addressed by a group that can provide proactive partnership to law enforcement from initial tip through verdict and not be frustrated by geographic, judicial boundaries.
The mission of the Office is to prosecute multi-circuit organized crime and to assist other law enforcement officials in their efforts against organized crimes. The prosecutors in the Office work regularly with their federal and state counterparts to coordinate efforts against criminal activity.
The Statewide Prosecutor is appointed by the Attorney General from a list of nominees selected by the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission. The Statewide Prosecutor serves a term of four years and acts as the agency head for eight offices stationed throughout the state.
Throughout the years, Florida’s Governors have called upon the Office to empanel a Statewide Grand Jury to examine critical issues in criminal law affecting the state and to seek indictments against offenders.
Each year the Statewide Prosecutor submits a report to the Governor, the Attorney General, and Florida’s Legislature. Those reports highlight successes and outline goals for the years ahead.
Crime victims are the heart of each case prosecuted by the Office. Florida’s Constitution recognizes the importance of victims in the judicial proceedings. Below are links to help crime victims and, if you are involved in a case being prosecuted by the Office, you can check on the status of the court’s proceedings.
