Attorney General Leads Successful Cabinet Motion to Require Numerous Florida Agencies to Use E-Verify System
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum today issued the following statement after proposing a motion that was passed unanimously by the Governor and Florida Cabinet to require all Florida state agencies under the Cabinet’s authority to use the E-verify system when screening potential employees:
“When individuals who ignore the legal process of citizenship obtain work, they are taking away employment opportunities from thousands of Floridians who need jobs to support themselves and their families.
“I applaud our Cabinet for taking action today and voting to require that every Cabinet agency use the E-verify system. Florida state government should lead by example, and this is an excellent example to set.”
The Department of Homeland Security’s E-Verify system allows employers to determine the eligibility of an employee to work in the United States. The internet-based system uses information from employees’ Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification with no charge for employers to use the system.
