Medical Technician Arrested for Abusing Mentally Disabled Patient

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Attorney General Pam Bondi’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Miami-Dade Police Department today announced the arrest of a medical technician for abuse of a mentally disabled patient. While a medical technician at Kendall Regional Medical Center, Giovanni Contreras, 52, allegedly became upset with a disabled patient asking questions. According to the investigation, Contreras grabbed the patient by the shirt and threw the patient to the ground. Kendall Regional Medical Center subsequently terminated Contreras.

Contreras faces one count of abuse of an elderly or disabled adult, a third-degree felony. If convicted, the Contreras faces up to five years in prison. The State Attorney’s Office for the 11
th Judicial Circuit is prosecuting the case.

Medicaid fraud essentially steals from Florida's taxpayers. From Jan. 2011 to the present, Attorney General Bondi's MFCU has obtained more than $500 million in settlements and judgments. Additionally, the MFCU investigates allegations of patient abuse, neglect, and exploitation in facilities receiving payments under the Medicaid program.
