Floridians Affected by Gulf Coast Claims Facility Errors Will Receive an Estimated $37.7 Million in Relief

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Findings released today by the Department of Justice show that approximately $64 million in relief will go to claimants who were adversely affected by Gulf Coast Claims Facility errors. Approximately 4,450 Floridians will receive an estimated $37.7 million in relief. The roughly 4,450 Floridians account for more than 60 percent of the total estimated 7,300 claimants who were adversely affected by errors in claims processing. The evaluation was agreed to by former Administrator Feinberg after urging by Attorney General Bondi, other Gulf Coast Attorneys General, and the Department of Justice.

“I had always wanted an audit in order to bring transparency to the claims process, and thankfully Floridians will now receive the millions in relief that they deserve,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Since taking office, Attorney General Bondi has ardently advocated on behalf of the Floridians, businesses, and government entities that have suffered losses caused by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Attorney General Bondi requested that the audit include, among other things, a review of unexplained discrepancies in payments to similarly situated claimants and the documentation required by the GCCF.

On December 2011, the Department of Justice announced the selection of BDO Consulting to perform an independent audit the Gulf Coast Claims Facility claims process.

The objectives of the audit included:

Gaining an understanding of and memorializing the GCCF’s operations, protocols and methodologies;

Testing claims to identify and correct errors and improve GCCF processes; and

Providing input to help determine the validity of certain concerns brought by the DOJ, as a result of their meeting with public officials and others from the Gulf States.
Attorney General Bondi will continue to monitor the claims process. To view the Executive Summary, please click here:
