Attorney General Bondi Announces Arrest of Registered Nurse for Neglecting an Elderly, Disabled Adult

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—An investigation led by Attorney General Bondi’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit culminated today with the arrest of a registered nurse for allegations of failing to assess and monitor a patient’s condition. Shannon Poppell, a registered nurse, turned herself in to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office on the charges of one count of neglect of an elderly, disabled adult and one count of falsification of hospital records. Prior to having her employment terminated, Poppell worked for Shands at Live Oak in Suwannee County, also known as Health Management Associates.

According to the investigation, Poppell failed to care for and monitor the condition of a 94-year-old woman who fell and broke her hip and shoulder. The woman later died. Poppell allegedly falsified hospital medical records to conceal her failure to provide proper nursing care to the victim. She faces up to five years and two months in prison and a $5,500 fine. The case will be prosecuted by the State Attorney’s Office for the Third Judicial Circuit of Florida.
