Speech Pathologist Arrested for Defrauding Medicaid out of over $262,000

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Attorney General Bill McCollum today announced that a Duval County man is in custody after he defrauded the Florida Medicaid Program out of more than $262,000. Oliver Workman, a speech pathologist in Jacksonville, surrendered to law enforcement at the Clay County Jail after learning the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit had issued a warrant for his arrest.

Based upon a referral from the Agency for Health Care Administration’s Medicaid Program Integrity Division, Medicaid Fraud investigators discovered that Workman, 59, was billing the Medicaid program from 2003 to 2007 for services he never provided. According to information from parents of recipients, Workman repeatedly billed the Medicaid program for their children’s speech therapy, but never performed the services.

Workman will be charged with one count Medicaid fraud, a third-degree felony, and one count grand theft over one hundred thousand dollars, a first-degree felony. If convicted, he faces up to 35 years in prison and a $15,000 fine. The case will be prosecuted by the State Attorney’s Office for the Seventh Judicial Circuit.
