TALLAHASSEE, FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum today issued the following statement applauding the signing of the Debt Collection Bill (SB 2086):

“With a struggling economy, many Floridians are suffering financially and are more vulnerable to abusive debt collectors,” said Attorney General McCollum. “This bill takes important steps to protect consumers who are experiencing financial hardships, and I am glad to see it signed into law.”

This legislation strengthens the debt collection statute by giving the Attorney General authority to pursue violations of the debt collection statute. It also enhances the Office of Financial Regulation’s ability to pursue debt collection agencies involved in bad practices.
