TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Attorney General Ashley Moody today called on all Florida school districts to fully comply with student safety laws. Attorney General Moody’s demand for action follows the release of an interim report by the Statewide Grand Jury on School Safety that found numerous Florida school districts are not complying with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Safety Act—the districts’ names are being kept confidential under 905.24 F.S.S.

State lawmakers passed the Act last year to improve school safety after a gunman killed 17 students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and wounded 17 others.

Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “As Attorney General of the State of Florida and as a mother, protecting our children is of the utmost importance to me personally and professionally. I am astounded to learn that numerous school districts in Florida are not following the laws passed to protect our children.

“Unfortunately, the interim report does not name the school districts that are out of compliance with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Safety Act, but the districts are certainly aware. So, let me be very clear, elected officials in school districts blatantly and irresponsibly shirking these extremely important public safety measures, need to take steps immediately to comply with the law before the school year begins and we put our children in your trust and care.”

The Statewide Grand Jury on School Safety Interim Report can be viewed by clicking here.

Attorney General Moody’s Statewide Prosecutor Nick Cox is overseeing the Grand Jury proceedings. The Grand Jury is still in session; therefore, these proceedings remain confidential under 905.24 F.S.S.
