TALLAHASSEE, FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum today announced that a Bay County woman was arrested on charges that she misused her job at a Bay County group home to fraudulently obtain a controlled substance. Rekenda D. Gaines was arrested by investigators with the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit with assistance from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit began investigating Gaines, 30, after receiving information from the Florida Department of Children and Families, Adult Protective Services. Gaines allegedly obtained approximately 60 tablets of Hydrocodone, then attempted to conceal the fraud by signing another caregiver’s name on records indicating that the drugs were provided to a patient at Gulf View Group Home.
Gaines was charged with one count of obtaining controlled substances by fraud, a third-degree felony, and one misdemeanor count of falsifying medical records. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The case will be prosecuted by the State Attorney for the 14th Judicial Circuit.
