Attorney General Applauds Senate Banking and Insurance Committee's Interim Report and Proposed Legislation Involving Debt Collectors

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum today issued the following statement on the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee’s report and proposed legislation involving debt collectors:

“The recommendations in the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee's interim report provide the Office of Financial Regulation with powerful new tools to pursue debt collectors seeking to exploit consumers. This is an important regulatory role we must address.

"I am encouraged to see the proposed committee bill contains my suggested language for expanded enforcement authority to pursue out-of-state debt collectors and enhanced protections for consumers who use credit counseling and debt relief services.

"I look forward to working with the legislature to ensure these meaningful reforms become law.”
