There is no greater example of selflessness than what Florida’s law enforcement officers do every day – protect others.

This week I attended the Fraternal Order of Police Law Enforcement Memorial and the Florida Sheriffs Association Law Enforcement Memorial. From January 2011 to date, 202 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty nationwide. Fifteen of those officers were from Florida. These brave men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives for our safety.

These heartbreaking losses serve as a reminder of the constant dangers Florida’s law enforcement officers face every day. I attended each funeral for our officers who were murdered last year. These fallen officers, as well as their families and friends, continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Last month, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement released the 2011 Annual Uniform Crime Report, which shows that Florida’s crime rate is the lowest it has been in 41 years. We are blessed to live in a state with such dedicated law enforcement officers, and we must always remember the great sacrifices they make for our safety.

It was an honor to pay tribute to such brave men and women and to support the family members and friends of the officers who have lost their lives.

In closing, as we celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, I wish all mothers a very special Mother’s Day. Thank you for all that you do for your families.
