Since taking office, my Medicaid Fraud Control Unit has aggressively investigated allegations of Medicaid fraud and patient abuse across Florida, and this week was no exception.
Three separate MFCU investigations culminated in the arrests of three defendants on charges ranging from Medicaid fraud to patient abuse and neglect. These arrests are the result of the tireless efforts of my MFCU investigators, who leave no stone unturned in the search for justice.
On Tuesday, MFCU investigators arrested a former Gadsden County hospital employee for allegedly abusing a disabled patient by kicking the restrained patient multiple times in the head. On Wednesday, my investigators arrested a former Miami nursing home employee for allegedly taking ATM cards belonging to elderly and disabled residents, and spending more than $13,000 without their knowledge or consent. Thursday, we announced the arrest of a Pinellas County man for allegedly defrauding Medicaid out of at least $39,000 by continuously billing Medicaid for a patient he was no longer serving. These are just a few examples of how my MFCU is fighting daily to protect Floridians.
Since I took office in 2011, we have obtained more than half a billion dollars in settlements and judgments. Thanks to great partnerships, not only in Florida, but across our nation, we will continue to fight Medicaid fraud and protect vulnerable populations from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
