This week was significant for many reasons. I attended two law enforcement memorial ceremonies; it was Public Service Recognition week; and it was the last week of the 2011 legislative session.

On Monday, I attended the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. There is no greater example of love and commitment than sacrificing one's life for others, and I was honored to share the day with the family members and friends who have lost loved ones in the line of duty. Law enforcement officers' bravery is truly exemplary, and I am eternally grateful to each man and woman in law enforcement for what they do for our state.

Later that afternoon, I attended FDLE Special Agent "JB" Dobson's memorial service. Special Agent Dobson died in a helicopter crash 20 years ago outside of Live Oak. He had been working on a marijuana eradication operation. The video, remarks and tree dedication ceremony were a wonderful way to honor his contributions and sacrifice, and I am thankful for the time I was able to spend with his wonderful family.

Just as law enforcement officers are public servants, so are many Floridians who serve in our federal, state, and local governments. This week is Public Service Recognition week, and I want to take the time to thank our agency's employees for their hard work and dedication to the Attorney General's Office.

In closing, today ends the 2011 legislative session. I will be sending a special newsletter reporting on the results of the session. I want to thank the members of the House and Senate for working with me to enhance public safety and protect the rights of Floridians.

Attorney General Announces $90.8 Million National Settlement with UBS over Anticompetitive Scheme

Attorney General Bondi announced on Wednesday that Florida reached a $90.8-million, multistate settlement with Union Bank of Switzerland AG (UBS) for its alleged role in a nationwide scheme to rig bids and engage in other anticompetitive and fraudulent conduct relating to municipal bond derivatives that defrauded state agencies, local governmental entities and not-for-profit entities. The multistate settlement is part of a settlement UBS is entering into simultaneously with the United States Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division (DOJ), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Attorney General Bondi Files Lawsuit Against Three South Florida Companies for Foreclosure Rescue Fraud

On Monday, the Attorney General’s Office filed a lawsuit against three South Florida companies that allegedly were charging upfront fees for loan modification services to homeowners facing foreclosure. Charging upfront fees for these services is illegal, per F.S. 501.1377. Home Owner Protection Economics, Inc., DC Financial Group, Deleverage America, Inc. and owners Dennis Fischer, and Christopher S. Godfrey purportedly collected thousands of dollars monthly in upfront fees for loan modification services that were never provided. As a result of the lawsuit filed by the Attorney General’s Office, the Palm Beach County Circuit Court ordered the defendants’ assets be frozen and that they be forbidden from operating until further order of the court.

Attorney General Bondi Files Response Brief to 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Health Care Lawsuit

On Wednesday, Attorney General Bondi and Florida’s 25 co-plaintiff states filed their brief responding to the federal government’s appeal in the health care lawsuit. The states’ brief reaffirms that the health care law unconstitutionally infringes on individual freedoms, exceeds Congress’s enumerated powers, and coerces the states in violation of the Tenth Amendment. The next step in the lawsuit is oral argument before a three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on June 8th.
