Attorney General Bondi's Weekly Briefing

This week I joined 19 other state attorneys general to take legal action against six drug companies for alleged anticompetitive behavior. These drug-makers allegedly conspired with each other to restrain trade, artificially inflate and manipulate prices and reduce competition in our country for two generic medications, an antibiotic and an oral diabetes medication.

The generic pharmaceutical industry accounts for the majority of prescriptions written in the United States, and last year, generic drug sales in the country exceeded $70 billion. Generic medicine is an important option for consumers in need of medical care and any effort to distort the price of these drugs harms consumers.

The complaint my office and the other state attorneys general filed alleges the companies’ senior executives and their subordinate marketing and sales executives routinely coordinated anticompetitive schemes with competitors at industry trade shows and customer conferences and through direct email, phone and text message.

The multistate action we filed this week asks the court to enjoin the drug companies from engaging in illegal, anticompetitive behavior and for substantial financial relief. Thanks to the continued partnerships between my office and our fellow state attorneys general, these drug companies will be held accountable and the marketplace with be better protected.
