Attorney General Bondi's Weekly Briefing
This week, my Office of Statewide Prosecution joined the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office to announce the disbanding of a major criminal organization stretching from Tampa to the Florida Keys. This criminal enterprise put Floridians statewide in danger, by not only stealing and channeling drugs throughout our state, but also, extorting and intimidating innocent Floridians to advance their scheme.
As a result of this coordinated investigation, we arrested eight individuals allegedly participating in this expansive criminal organization. These defendants face a range of felony charges including armed trafficking in cocaine, dealing in stolen property, insurance fraud and extortion. According to the multi-agency investigation, the defendants used false claims to defraud insurance companies and provided loans to individuals who the suspects then extorted using threats of violence.
To stop this complex enterprise we also partnered with the Department of Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and the Miami-Dade Police Department. My Office of Statewide Prosecution will aggressively prosecute these individuals and partner with law enforcement to stop drug traffickers in Florida.
Thanks to the great investigative work of these agencies, and all of our brave law enforcement officers, Florida remains a safe place to live, work and raise a family.
On Tuesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi joined Governor Rick Scott and fellow Cabinet members, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, for a meeting of the Florida Cabinet in Tallahassee.
Attorney General Bondi joining Governor Scott and fellow cabinet members to award five Florida State University Police Officers with the Medal of Heroism. These five brave officers responded first to a call of an active shooter at one of Florida State University’s campus libraries, exchanged gunfire with the gunman and stopped the shooter.
