A new Statewide Drug Enforcement Strike Force report was released on Monday showing strong progress in Florida's fight against pill mills and the illegal distribution of prescription drugs. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Bailey detailed the report findings that showed numerous arrests have been made, and thousands of pills have been removed from Florida's streets and neighborhoods. This is great news for Floridians and could have only been accomplished through a collaborative effort on the local, state and federal level. It is clear that combating Florida's deadly prescription drug crisis is a top priority for all of us.

Unfortunately, prescription drug-related deaths have increased by nine percent since 2009, according to the 2010 Drugs in Deceased Persons Report, which was also released on Monday. Although this news is saddening, I am confident that with the tough new laws targeting pill mills now in effect, along with the collaborative efforts of the Drug Enforcement Strike Force, this report will reflect positive changes in the future.

I have made combating prescription drug abuse a main focus of my administration, and we will continue to work tirelessly to protect the lives of Floridians and rid our state of deadly pill mills.
