Homeowners Need Help in Housing Crisis

Since the beginning of this housing crisis, I have been encouraging Floridians to work with their lenders to try avoiding foreclosure so they can stay in their homes. Many responsible Florida homeowners have made every effort to contact their banks to refinance their mortgages or modify their home loans.

At the Housing Crisis forums I have been hosting throughout the state, homeowners have been providing me with first-hand accounts of the extremely frustrating experiences they have had at the hands of their banks and the gross lack of customer service available. Last Saturday in Broward County, a man told me how his bank had deliberately shamed him because he was asking for help.

I am outraged that the very same banks that eagerly put homeowners into loans may be making it difficult for the now-desperate homeowners to receive assistance. The banks were part of the problem that led to this crisis, and they should be first in line to help with a solution.

Attorney General Bill McCollum announced that his office has filed a lawsuit against two Central Florida companies and their owner over allegations they charged up-front fees for foreclosure rescue-related services. National Payment Modification Company and The Bostonian Group, LLC, which conducts business under the name People’s First, allegedly charge up to $2,500 in up-front fees to homeowners trying to rescue their homes from foreclosure.

Attorney General McCollum activated Florida’s price gouging hotline to address complaints related to Hurricane Ida. The Attorney General is charged with enforcing the price gouging statute during declared states of emergency. McCollum encouraged Floridians and guests to report incidents of price gouging immediately to the Attorney General’s hotline.

The Attorney General’s Office and the Florida Interagency Mortgage Task Force hosted a Broward County community forum to discuss the housing crisis. The event, designed to present a comprehensive approach for dealing with housing-related issues, provided community education and assistance to over 100 attendees. Participating agencies included state agencies, law enforcement, and regulatory authorities.

Attorney General Bill McCollum issued the following statement in recognition of Veterans Day:

“Every day, heroic men and women answer the call to serve our nation in the Armed Forces. The decision to do so comes with the very real knowledge that they will have to make sacrifices for their country and could ultimately give their lives while protecting U.S. interests both domestic and abroad.
