Remembering Charley

On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley made landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane on Florida's Southwest coast near Punta Gorda, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. That same year, Florida was hit by four other named storms, Bonnie, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. It was the first time in recorded history that Florida was hit by five named storms in one year.

The 2004 hurricane season left Floridians shell-shocked, and many Floridians took heed and developed a plan for their homes and families ahead of the 2005 season. It has now been more than three years since Florida has experienced a significant storm, and we are indeed fortunate in that regard.

Saturday is the fifth anniversary of Charley's landfall and August and September are historically the most active months of the Atlantic hurricane season and now is not the time to grow complacent. I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and make plans now to protect your families and property before a storm threatens us again.
